session 1: Love and the stories we tell

Dr. Jessica Grieser

Dr. Jessi Grieser is an associate professor of linguistics at the University of Michigan. Dr. Greiser studies the linkages between language and race and place identities, African American Language, and language and gentrification, as well as language online. She's the author of The Black Side of the River: Race, Language and Belonging in Washington, D.C. (2022). Dr. Greiser helps us think about the narratives used to describe our communities and how love for neighbor requires us to engage those narratives and consider the stories we tell.

session 2: Love for the vulnerable and mistreated

Dr. Christina Edmondson

Dr. Edmondson has served in a variety of roles including recently as the Dean for Intercultural Student Development at Calvin University. She serves as an instructor and partners with several universities to develop ethical and impactful leaders. A Certified Cultural Intelligence facilitator, public speaker, and mental health therapist, Christina is often contacted by churches to consult about leadership development, anti-racism, and mental health issues. She is the author of Faithful Anti-Racism and co-author of Truth's Table. Dr. Edmondson  helps us think about practices and cultures that communicate Christ’s love to vulnerable persons and those who have suffered harm.

session 3: Love Your Sisters

Duke Kwon, Anna Laura Grant, Nana Hansen-Hall

Anna Laura Grant and Nana Hansen-Hall, two sisters who serve as “shepherdesses” at Grace Meridian Hill, a cross-cultural neighborhood church located in one of the most ethnically and economically diverse parts of Washington, D.C. They are joined by Rev. Duke Kwon, senior minister of Grace Meridian Hill. They talk with us about the theology and history of the "shepherdess" role and the practice of it in the life of their church.

session 4: Keeping the Pressures of Ministry from Becoming Pressure at Home

Jamie and Louis Love, Kristie and Thabiti Anyabwile join Pastor Jeremy McClain for a discussion of the pressures of ministry and how to keep family first and balanced.

session 5: Love for the Grieving Panel and Discussion

John O. / Panel & Discussion: John O. and Jeremy McClain; Moderator: Joya Matthews

John O. was one of the founding pastors of Cornerstone Church in Atlanta, GA and a founding board member of The Crete Collective. He's a partner in Portrait Coffee, a coffee business he helped found to serve the West End neighborhood of Atlanta. He's the author of We Go On, a book he wrote chronicling and responding to his years-long grief. John will be joined by Pastor Jeremy McClain and Joya Matthews to help us think about serving our neighbors experiencing grief.

session 6: Love Your Immigrant and Refugee Neighbor

Nestor Gomez

Nestor Gomez is the teaching pastor at Bluegrass Community Church in Lexington, KY. He's also a Gun Violence Crisis Response Advocate in Lexington. Bluegrass Community Church is one of three churches supported by The Crete Collective in our first year. Nestor and the team have worked hard to love and serve their largely immigrant community in Lexington. He will share some of their learning and experience.
